Add page numbers to a PDF

Number the pages of any PDF, choose where the numbers go, and skip the cover if you like.

About the Add Page Numbers tool

Assembled documents, scanned reports and merged files usually have no page numbers, or numbering that restarts halfway. Adding numbers at the end, once the page order is settled, gives you consistent references for contents pages, citations and meetings.

Choose any of six positions, a style such as 3, Page 3 or 3 of 12, a starting number, and a font size. You can leave the first page unnumbered so a cover stays clean. Numbers follow each page's own orientation, so rotated pages are numbered the right way up.

Questions

Add Page Numbers FAQ

How do I start numbering from page 2?

Tick “Skip the first page”. The cover stays blank and the next page is numbered with your starting number.

Can I start from a number other than 1?

Yes. Set the starting number to anything, for example 5 if this document continues from another.

Will the numbers overlap existing footers?

They sit about 30 points from the page edge. If the page already has a footer there, choose the top position, or a different corner.

Do the numbers become part of the file?

Yes. They are drawn into the PDF, so they print and display everywhere, but they cannot be edited later.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The work happens in your browser, on your own device, so the file is never sent to a server. Close the tab and nothing is left behind.
